What is Inward Turning Eyelid (Entropion)?

Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid rotates inwards causing the eyelashes to rub on the ocular surface. This can lead to corneal abrasion and ulceration if left untreated.

Inward Turning Eyelid (Entropion) Symptoms

What are the Symptoms?

  • Irritable eye
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Red eye
  • Watery eye
  • Intermittently blurred vision

What are the Causes?

Entropion is commonly related to natural ageing of the eyelid and surrounding structures. Thinning and atrophy of eyelid muscles and their associated tendons causes horizontal lid laxity whilst the preseptal and pretarsal components of the orbicularis oculi muscle overlap. Together, this causes the eyelid (predominantly the lower lid) to rotate inwards.

Inward Turning Eyelid (Entropion) Diagnosis

What is the Diagnosis?

Our first consideration is to protect the corneal surface from abrasion by epilating any lashes that are in contact with the eye. A bandage contact lens may be inserted to provide further protection. Entropion surgery may be advised by your Laser Vision Ophthalmologist if the eyelid is significantly rotated, your cornea is compromised or your symptoms appear unmanageable. This permanent solution involves the removal of a small section of eyelid tissue before the structure is tightened and repositioned with stitches.
