What is Outward Turning Eyelid (Ectropion)?

Ectropion is a condition in which the eyelid rotates outwards causing the inner lining of the eyelid to be exposed. It rarely poses a threat to vision but may cause significant ocular discomfort and irritation.

  • Irritable eye
  • Watery eye
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Red eye
  • Intermittently blurred vision

What are the Causes?

Ectropion is commonly related to natural ageing of the eyelid and surrounding structures. An involutional loss of elasticity results in the lower lid drooping down from its natural position. Alternatively, Ectropion can occur in patients with Bell’s Palsy whereby the nervous innervation to the muscles of the eyelids and face is paralysed.

What are the Causes?

What is the Diagnosis?

Our first consideration is to protect the corneal surface from exposure dryness with regular lubrication. More advanced cases of Ectropion may require surgical intervention whereby the outer margins of the eyelids are tightened through a procedure known as a lateral tarsal strip. This procedure typically takes around 45 minutes with a local anaesthetic and yields excellent outcomes for the majority of patients.
