YAG Capsulotomy
Post-cataract Nd:YAG Laser Capsulotomy is a non-invasive, outpatient procedure for the treatment of Posterior Capsular Opacification.
OPC is a common occurrence following cataract surgery in which the capsule holding the implanted lens clouds. Lens epithelial cells occupy the space between the capsule and the implant to cause symptoms similar to cataract. This phenomenon typically takes place within the first two years of surgery.
What is YAG Capsulotomy?
Your consultant ophthalmologist will clean the implanted lens using a painless laser.
If judged to be appropriate, a YAG capsulotomy can be performed on the same day of your consultation. You will be able to go home as soon as the procedure is complete and will not experience any pain. YAG Capsulotomy is a very low risk procedure with a high success rate.
Depending on the cloudiness of the lens, many patients can see improvements in their vision straight away. All procedures carry some degree of risk and you will be fully informed of all matters relating to the procedure by your consultant ophthalmologist.

How is it performed?
- 1.Your doctor will apply both pupil dilating and numbing eye drops to the affected eye
- 2.A magnifying lens will be held close to the eye to allow the doctor to visualise the cloudy lens
- 3.An Nd-Yag laser is used to apply low-energy pulses at the frosted back surface of the lens
- 4.You may be prescribed a short course of anti-inflammatory drops
- 5.You will not require any additional treatment because the cloudy capsule does not regrow after it is vaporised by the laser
