What is LASIK?If you’re considering your options for laser eye surgery, you’ve undoubtedly come across LASIK. But what is it, what are the benefits, and is there anything you should consider before choosing this vision correction procedure?

Before you commit to laser vision correction, we’re here to help you understand laser eye surgery, including its benefits and considerations.

LASIK is the most popular type of laser eye surgery in the UK, and it’s estimated that tens of millions of people have had this procedure worldwide.

About LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery that works by reshaping the cornea to correct problems with vision. It’s commonly used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It may also be used to treat presbyopia – an age-related condition – although this may not reduce your need to wear glasses.

During the procedure, the corneal tissue is altered with an excimer laser to change the way light rays enter the retina. Numbing eye drops are used so that surgery is painless and quick – taking less than 30 minutes.

Is Laser Refractive Surgery Safe?

LASIK is one of the safest forms of eye surgery, it has been performed since the 1990s following decades of research. As with any surgery, there are risks, however, serious complications are extremely rare.

During your initial consultation, you’ll be made aware of any risks associated with laser eye surgery. Typically, these include dry eyes, halos or glare, eye infections, corneal ectasia, and vision loss.

Choosing a reputable eye doctor and reliable clinic will help mitigate any risks or chance of complications. Be sure to check reviews and research your chosen clinic.

Benefits of LASIK Surgery

Most patients turn to laser eye surgery when they no longer want to wear contact lenses or glasses to correct vision. This may be due to comfort or convenience – especially if you tend to lose your corrective eyewear or play contact sports.

With this quick procedure, patients can enjoy corrected vision within a matter of hours. The healing process is very quick, and the results can last for 10 years or longer.

Is LASIK Right for You?

You’ll need to have a comprehensive eye exam to see if laser eye surgery is suitable. Your ophthalmologist will discuss the procedure and expected outcomes based on your eyes and current vision.

If LASIK laser treatment is not a viable option for you, your surgeon should be able to offer alternative treatment options to address your refractive errors.

Alternatives to LASIK Surgery

Other alternatives to LASIK are available, including PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), LASEK (Laser-Assisted Epithelial Keratomileusis), and SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction).

Each procedure differs in terms of its purpose and process. Your refractive surgery team will be able to let you know if you are a more suitable candidate for any of these procedures.

How Much Does Laser Eye Surgery Cost?

The price of laser eye surgery depends on a few factors, including the type of laser surgery, your chosen eye surgeon, your current eyesight prescription and the hospital fee for where the surgery takes place.

You’ll most likely need to have an initial consultation and assessment to determine the cost of your LASIK procedure.

As a ballpark figure, LASEK and LASIK surgery costs can start at £1850 per eye inclusive of aftercare appointments, medication, diagnostic assessment and consultant surgeon fees.

Premium refractive surgery using a femtosecond laser or a refractive lens exchange can be more expensive due to the complex nature of the procedure.
